Peter -- I had a similar problem in my V8 S-10 Blazer a few months ago. 
On slight inclines I'd give it a little more gas and it seemed like TCC
was locking/unlocking.  Result?  $525 bill for rebuilding the trans.  In
my case (according to mechanic) the TCC clutches were
shredding/slipping.  I'd have yours looked at right away, although if
it's been doing it a while it may be too late.
