I have an emp10 and use a 165 ecm.  I originally had a lot of trouble with
the same type of thing
that you are experiencing.  I read the chip as an Intel 27C128.  I was
putting the adapter I made
too deeply into the zif socket.  I had to set it a bit higher when I read
the eprom.  I read it, wiggle it a
bit and verify that buffer matches device.  If you have any cold solders or
any sort of problem with
resistance it will do the same thing.  I don't think you can read one of
these too fast. Unless it's
an aftermarket memcal you should have no problem reading it after you work
out the bugs.
