Broken timing gear



 Hi All,
   This is is not an EFI question but I was hoping someone could point me in 
the right direction. I recently acquired a 1987 Buick Park Avenue with a 
broken 3.8 engine. I removed the valve covers and timing chain cover. The cam 
sprocket failed probably because of slack in the timing chain or the cam 
button ( I think ). The engine has 79,000 miles and seems to have been well 
maintained. Is this a common occurrence and should I proceed to pull the 
valve gear and heads to look for further damage? Any help would be greatly
