RE: sbc in place of lt1

Not that this is anything new, but being down this road recently, I found
that it may be a better deal to buy a crate motor, especially if you are not
doing it yourself. My machine work alone was $800 and the total rebuild was
$2k. No cylinder heads (3-angle valve job on stock), no forged parts, no
new crank. I contemplated going to the 383 route but to have to change the
crank and rods for that was an additional $500 I didn't have. Oh yeah, the
machine work was decently priced for my area. It's not like I got taken.

I laugh at mag stories that say you can build a 383 400HP motor for under
$2k. Then you find out that Joe Blow friend gave them a set of heads and an
aluminum intake for $40 out the door. ... Well, what you know, I'm
pouting...

My $0.02.
Steve

We do these upgrades to LT1/4 , the most common low $ setup is the 383,
much less cost than attempt use of 70s 400 block and components.
Upgrade to a 383 to a hurt/tired Lt1 is not much different in cost than
normal performance remanufacture on 4.030 x 3.480 combo. Course , someone
opts for JEs vs Ohio's or Olivers vs GM PMs , Callies vs Cast , $$$ +
substantially.
