This is like asking a cattle rancher what to have for dinner.  Get out

1987 Chevy 1/2 ton with TBI.  A friend and I converted his truck from
carb to tbi in 18 hrs, because his 81 and the donor 87 were so
similar.

Yes.  The best bet is to get a tank from an efi equipped pickup like
yours.  
The 87 would do nicely. ; )
Maybe it's time to start looking for efi books at the local book
store?
