Re: LT-1 Heads
Yep , Fluid Dynamics doesn't seem to be a strong point in the LS1 lube
system chain , along with the NorthStar style oil pump scheme , which BTW,
Cad has had Drive Gear spin on crank snout . LS1 heads will fit on a Ford
Windsor with some revisions and visa versa. Betcha that gets things cooking
up @ 33003 Van Dyke ! What made the small block so popular WAS the
interchangeability / reuse of components , that's GONE ,now most fasteners
are TTY as well. In competition use some folks have had Cylinder case
motor mounting and starter boss failures on LS1, [ Now Revised ]. Many
design features today are done for packaging / profit advantage , not
necessarily for longevity or power , not lending themselves to upgrade later,
without total replacement. [ unfortunate ].

The LS-1 is conventionally cooled. The reverse flow thing for the
LT1 was primarily hype. The bizarre water pumps were a major warranty
service failure point too.
The LS-1's wristpins and lifters supposedly will interchange with a
normal small block Chevy; otherwise it might as well be a Ford or
Rambler, because nothing else in there is even remotely compatible with
the previous engines.
It's actually a fairly nice design, except for that crapball gerotor
oil pump driven off the crank snout. That's a common design nowadays,
but it's done to be cheap to make, not because it's good. The long
pickup tubes mean it takes a longer time to build oil pressure, and once
you aerate the oil (like if you're running a track event) the pump
starts having problems sucking the oil up above the sump level. Pumps
should run with a positive head; that's my less-than-tolerant opinion.
