I remember talking to Ed W. about this a long time back...he uses lock-up
early to gain the extra speed. I kinda 'ways thought that you'd lose
converter multiplication, but apparently his lock-up strategy works great.

Also remember with an automatic that the slippage of the converter decreases with increasing RPM... once the car is at a speed where the TC input and output are up a ways, the slippage is much less and the torque multiplication is lower as well. Locking up the converter in that area removes the slippage and allows the engine to pull the car to a higher MPH for a given RPM. I remember back on the Grand Nationals, locking up the converter clutch in 2nd gear and higher was good for almost 0.5 seconds in the 1/4 mile. Once you are thru 1st gear and rolling, a solid connection is better.
