SOunds like you passed on the one I bought :-)  My '91 is worn and burns
oil also at startup...  In hindsight I think I could have negotiated a
much better deal at the junkyard but now I'm smarter.

Anyway, find out what code is stored with the SES light, and follow the
troubleshooting chart in your manual (you have the manual, right? :-) 
It'll help you narrow down to the knock sensor, the ESC module, or the
wiring.
