RE: Reading Plugs

Normal Spark Plug "Read" procedure; Full Power WOT. then cut clean[off]
Don't allow engine to idle, or the "read" is junk info.
Yes , make a full pass in executing the test.
Here we go again; Specific spark plug designs / heat ranges have different
time durations in which they color accurately . Different fuel branding and "brews" also color differently and @ different rates. Best advise , duplicate
test environment by running on the same course , using the same fuel and
spark plugs. Start with OE combos and adjust from there.
Pay attention to the weather conditions as well. Always adjust
Fueling and Spark for "Rich Best Power" . It will save you from a melt down ,
Unless you happen to have deep pockets and lots of time to waste.

semi related to this thread...

What is the *best* procedure for getting the proper plug readings at a
particular throttle position?
Do you run the vehicle on a light load? heavy load? Are you supposed to
just kill the motor in the middle of a "run" and coast to stop? Is it ok to
idle to a stop and shut the motor off? How long should you operate in your
target range before the plug color becomes accurate? Any concerns with
overheating after a WOT run?

I've seen a few sites like Tim pointed out that had pictures of sample plugs
but not the correct way to actually tune an engine by reading plugs across
the entire operating range. Is there a FAQ somewhere on how to obtain
repeatable, consistent results?

TIA,
