ION

Your not going to believe this. . . I found a NACA report on the study
of lean AFR ratios and spark timing. That's not the best part.

They use an ION device to detect pre-ignition!

Yep, thyratrons, vacuum tubes, and all. Dated 1947. Here's the link:
