PWM stands for pulse width modulation.

PWM is used by a processor to do two things: produce square wave with a certain frequency and duty cycle, and also provide a certain analog output, usually from 0 - 5V.

The difference between making a square wave and a voltage is that there is a low pass filter on the output. That's it!
