You don't really need an add-on board to do that, just a MEMCAL with
appropriate self test software.

The peripheral board would allow you to hook up a terminal emulator and
get a command line interface to the testing software though.  This would
let the software promt the user to perform various tests ("Ground pin
D10."  "Hook a test light to F1.")

RPN = Reverse Polish Notation, aka postfix notation

In RPN, to add three and four:  3 4 +
